Great piece Colin and as a writer, loose term, I still have managed to resist the temptation to join Facebook. Will it bring my work to a wider audience, of course it will, but I have found that if you write something good enough others will share it there anyway. I also read recently that TikTok reaches a wider audience than all the other social media accounts put together. Have I got TikTok, No I haven't. The key bit in what you say is engaging with others. Whether you have multiple social media accounts or just one, if you don't engage with others your connectivity will be low no matter how good your writing is.
I love this piece, Colin. It’s so true. I’ve noticed my own antisocial and avoidant tendencies holding me back in a huge way in social media success (if we can really call it that). Posting content for activity is not enough if growth is your goal. But if community is your goal, posting content, authentically and lovingly created, still is not enough. You have to water and nurture everything you create through these relationships and sometimes it is too damn much. I completely agree.
And I suspect a lot happier following your own thread through life. Hope your dream of a financially sustaining writer's/publisher's life comes true for you. Personally know that your workshops are inspiring.
I totally agree...SM is exhausting and keeping me from writing, so I have to be myself as much as possible to make it easy.
