Welcome to History Through Fiction with Colin Mustful.
I founded this space to explore the art and business of telling historical stories. As an author, editor, and publisher, I’ve spent more than a decade helping writers bring the past to life on the page—through historically grounded fiction, well-crafted narratives, and meaningful publishing experiences.
Through History Through Fiction with Colin Mustful, I share what I’ve learned along the way: the victories and missteps, the evolving publishing landscape, and the behind-the-scenes realities of running an independent press. My goal is to demystify the writing and publishing process while inspiring authors to create historically authentic, emotionally resonant work.
Starting in 2026, I’ll be publishing on a regular schedule:
Free posts (1st & 3rd Wednesdays): Behind-the-scenes insights and lessons from my life as a writer, publisher, and editor.
Paid posts (2nd & 4th Wednesdays): Deep dives into craft, publishing, and book marketing.
Podcast — Behind the Publisher’s Desk (2nd & 4th Thursdays): A ten-minute, behind-the-scenes look at everything I’m working on as an independent publishers. Plus, conversations with authors and industry professionals about writing, editing, and publishing.
Workshops & Office Hours: Paid subscribers receive access to monthly Zoom links for live workshops (published as a paid post on the 2nd of each month), plus biweekly (2nd and 4th Friday at 12pm Central) office hours with marketing assistant Melissa Makarewicz, where we answer questions and discuss current trends in publishing and marketing.
A monthly subscription is $12, or $120/year, which includes full access to paid posts, workshops, and office hours.
While this Substack centers on writing and publishing, I’m also an author myself, and I’ll share updates and insights about my own books and creative process.
Whether you’re an emerging author, a seasoned storyteller, or simply fascinated by how history and fiction intersect, this space offers an honest, practical look at what it takes to write—and publish—historical narratives that last.
